This campaigning organization was established in 1985 by volunteer activists who were concerned about the economic, environmental and social damage caused by large dam projects around the world. They believe that rivers should be valued and protected as living systems, and they argue for more sustainable and equitable methods of meeting the needs for water, energy and flood management. From 1989, IRN began to develop a staff of experienced campaigners trained in economics, engineering, hydrology and environmental sciences. They work to influence public and policymakers’ opinion by publicising problems caused by large hydro-engineering projects, by giving voice to affected communities, by raising awareness of alternative river basin management methods and technologies and by providing platforms for like minded groups and individuals to exchange information, experience and opinions.
IRN’s work on China largely consists in monitoring hydro-engineering projects and collecting and disseminating information on them. It does this via a Chinese language website and email listserve. It has also translated into Chinese and made publicly available key documents such as final report of the World Commission on Dams Final Report (世界水坝委员会报告) and various IRN publications on energy alternatives. IRN has also helped to arrange seminars and exchange meetings to strengthen networking between civil society groups from both upstream and downstream areas of the Mekong/Lancang (湄公河上游/澜沧江)and Nujiang/Salween (怒江-萨尔温江) rivers.
IRN’s funding comes from membership fees and donations from supporters, and grants from foundations.
