This organisation was established in 1991 in Philadelphia, USA, by the International Church of Christ. Its Hong Kong affiliate oversees programmes both in Hong Kong and on China’s mainland.

Since 1998, it has each year mobilised groups of volunteers to travel to
Zhangjiajie, Hunan, to run a two-week English language summer course for high school students.

From 2001, it started a sponsorship programme for mainland students, matching students to individual donors. This covers education expenses for needy students, from primary school to university, in Yunnan, Hunan, Shanxi, and Gansu.

Through an affiliated adoption agency, HOPE has placed more than 600 Chinese orphans with families in nine countries overseas. It has also provided financial assistance and training services of Chinese orphanages.

In 2002, HOPE Worldwide’s total income was USD 32 million. Of this, around 27% was provided by the International Church of Christ, and the remainder came from inidividual supporters, fundraising efforts by local support groups in the United States, and grants from government agencies and corporations.
