Providing a diverse range of services to children, young people and their families, BGCA of Hong Kong was founded in 1936. Currently, it has over 50,000 members and staff of 1,000 professionals, including 400 well-trained registered social workers.

BGCA has organized various activities for Hong Kong youth. In Team Challenge, an annual summertime adventure-based program, over 100 teams of young people and general public are asked to complete a series of physical endurance challenge within 36 hours. In this way, BGCA aims to develop leadership skills and team-building spirits, judgment and problem-solving abilities among local youth. It also serves as an important method of public fundraising.

In addition, exchange programs have often been arranged for Hong Kong children and teenagers to visit some mainland areas like Guangxi, Guizhou and cities abroad like Vancouver, Canada in order to broaden their understanding towards different cultures.

To encourage future civic participation, a group of outstanding Hong Kong youth have been elected as Hong Kong Junior Chief Executives every two years since 2001. They will have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, the HKSAR Chief Executive and are encouraged to make their proposals on issues they concern. BGCA, in partnership with Guangzhou Municipal Children’s Activity Center, arranges exchange programs between Hong Kong Junior Chief Executives and Guangzhou Junior Mayor.

BGCA also offers a wide variety of services for different youth groups. Youth Employment Supportive Service Project is to provide a comprehensive range of services to school leavers and school dropouts aged 14 to 18, from job skills training, consultation and counseling, work placement to job hunting. It also supports cross-border children and parents in Shenzhen with parents’ meetings, workshops to help them understand the education system and life style in Hong Kong, and improve their guidance skills.

The Association’s budget primarily (70%) comes from government subvention. It also depends much on personal or company donations, fund-raising initiatives as well as membership and activity fees.
