This foundation was incorporated in the United States in 1893 to support the development of a college in Guangzhou that later became Lingnan University. After 1949, this was merged with Zhongshan University in Guangzhou. During the 1950s-1970s, the foundation continued to work with several colleges in Hong Kong. Some of these have since joined to become the Chinese University of Hong Kong, while a new Lingnan University has also been established in Hong Kong.
From the 1980s, the foundation resumed its work on the mainland, where Zhongshan University has now established an affiliated Lingnan College. The foundation works to support linkages between this family of academic institutions in southern China and with others in the United States.
The foundation aims to strengthen liberal education by encouraging: -- Student learning that emphasises analysis and expression -- Interdisciplinary inquiry -- Integration of academic work with community service, field study and internships -- Student participation in research and independent study -- International perspectives and exchange
It currently supports a number of fellowship and exchange programmes, as well as a programme to relate academic enquiry to issues and institutions in the wider community. For example, Environmental Science students are engaged in studies of the impact of economic development projects and the implementation of environmental law, while Business Studies students form advisory groups to advise local enterprises.
Note: the foundation does not consider proposals outside its current geographic and institutional areas of support.
The Lingnan Foundation net assets are worth around USD 20 million. In the year ending June 30 2004, it disbursed around USD 1 million in grants.
