A group of British Muslims founded Islamic Relief in 1984 in response to a severe drought in Africa. Twenty years later, it has grown into a substantial organisation with projects in 18 countries and a UK-based income of more than EUR 20 million in 2003.
The organisation continues to provide emergency aid, but also supports longer term development programmes, including water supply, health and nutrition, education and income generation projects. In addition, it runs special projects to care for orphans.
Islamic Relief made an exploratory mission to China in 2001 and, the following year, provided assistance for rehabilitation of communities struck by serious s flooding in Shaanxi Province. It has since carried out a number of water supply projects in China’s arid northern regions. Work has included rainwater harvesting in Gansu, and a well digging programme in Xinjiang. IR is now working to develop new projects in Ningxia.
Islamic Relief is funded mainly by donations from individual supporters in the UK. It encourages a traditional, Islamic form of giving, known in Arabic as ‘wakf’, which is similar to creating an endowment fund whose proceeds support charitable work, so that the value of the gift endures
