The Mennonite church is a Christian group that formed in the 16th century. It is known in the West as a 'peace church' committed to pacifism, non-violent activism and social service. About half of the world's million or so Mennonites live in the USA and Canada, but many of them originated from eastern Europe. Mennonites in Canada established the Mennonite Central Committee in the 1920s to provide relief for famine victims in Ukraine.
Today, the Committee has more than 1,400 staff in 55 countries around the world overseeing development projects in health, education, agriculture, conflict mediation, and disaster response.
The MCC's work in China began by placing North American teachers in Chinese colleges, in partnership with Sichuan Education Commission. This programme continues today: in 2005, 19 volunteer teachers worked in Chinese universities.
Since 2000, MCC has provided funding for children from poor families in Sichuan to stay in school. It has also supplied hearing aids for hearing-impaired children, and supported short term training for people who working with disabled children.
In addition, it has also supported a counselling centre.
MCC also provides emergency aid following natural disasters.
The Mennonite Central Committee's total, worldwide income in FY 2005 was USD 62 million. The great majority of this came from individual supporters and public fundraising operations, including 'thrift shops' that sell donated second-hand goods. USD 5.6 million of the total was provided by government grants and USD 914,000 by grants from other NGOS. Canadian farmers also donate grain to the Committee for food aid programmes overseas.
