Founded in Beijing in 2003, Magic Hospital seeks to brighten up the lives of children in hospital. Based on the concept that “laughter is the best medicine” the group aims to achieve a positive distraction for children.
In March 2003, Magic Hospital was given permission to bring a team of two clowns and one artist to Beijing Children’s Hospital. The original programme was curtailed by the SARS epidemic of that Spring, but rebounded quickly. Now, regular events include a two-hour visit to Beijing Children’s Hospital every Wednesday and to Peking University’s Number One Hospital every Friday. Activities, almost entirely carried out by volunteers, consist of magic performances, art classes and individuals dressed up as clowns.
On June 1st 2006, the eve of China’s national Children’s Day, Magic Hospital created 1,500 “magic boxes” consisting of crayons, T-shirts and other arts and crafts accessories. These were distributed to 13 different institutions. Most of the recipients, Magic Hosptial says, were the children of migrant workers and orphans.
Magic Hospital’s plans for the future include another national children’s day event, this time using “magic backpacks”. Around 70 volunteers will distribute 1,800 backpacks in Beijing and Shanghai. Magic Hospital also hopes to widen their core volunteer base—currently, about 10 people— to include more Chinese nationals.
In 2004, Magic Hospital opened an office in Paris to support their activities in China and to begin work in Europe.
