Founded in China in 2005 by a US citizen living in China, Prevention Through Education (PTE) focuses on reducing stigma and discrimination directed at people suffering from the AIDS virus. To date, PTE operations are confined solely to China.

PTE targets middle school children aged 13-15. It spent one year piloting work at Jingcai Middle School in Quzhou County, Zhejiang Province, and at the Nos 2, 3 and 4 Middle Schools of Fangshan County, also in Zhejiang. There, PTE developed an interactive, participatory module that occupies four class periods and that, PTE believes, can be replicated in other schools. Activities have included asking students to create characters and draw pictures of what they think an HIV positive individual might look like. Exercises of this kind are designed to sensitise students to stigma.

As of April 2007, PTE has begun training university students—mainly from Beijing Language and Culture University (北京语言文化大学) and the University of Mining and Technology (矿业大学)—to give AIDS awareness classes to children in “migrant schools” in Beijing.

PTE’s plans for the future include developing an in-service AIDS awareness teacher-training program for teachers from 68 schools in Beijing municipality.

PTE’s funding is mainly derived from donations from private individuals, with additional support from a Partnership for Giving created by US pharmaceutical company, Merck
