Established in 1991, Trees for Life initially developed an environmental education programme for Canadian elementary students called 'Grow-A-Tree'. Each 'Grow-A-Tree' kit provided resources to grow a tree from seed and learn the basics of science and ecology. With the goal of having 100 million children participating in the 'Grow-A-Tree' programme worldwide by 2010, TFL also works to establish sister organisations in other countries. As a result of its international work, TFL now supports pen-pal 'Classroom Exchange Program' for children in participating countries and a 'Volunteer Training Program' which trains non-Canadians to initiate TFL activities in their own countries.
Since 1994, Trees for Life China has distributed 'Grow-A-Tree' kits to over 1000 schools and 120,000 students, mainly in Beijing.
