Activities in Other Countries: Most of the foundation’s resources are used to support work in the USA, especially California, but it does also make some international grants.
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation was created in 1964 by David Packard -- co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard company -- and his wife Lucile Salter Packard who also worked in the company. When David Packard died in 1996 he left most of his personal wealth (in the form of shares in the Hewlett Packard company and Agilent Technology) to the Foundation. Grants are now made from the dividends and interest that accrue from this endowment.
The Foundation makes grants in the following areas: Conservation and Science; Population; and Children, Families, and Communities.
In China, the Foundation has been a major supporter of the China Sustainable Energy Programme implemented by the US-based Energy Foundation, which was created in order to carry out this programme. (See separate entry) In the period 2002-2004, the Packard Foundation awarded grants totalling USD 17.5 million to support this programme. The money is used to make grants to Chinese organisations working in the areas of energy conservation and efficiency, renewable energy and clean transportation.
The Foundation's endowed assets were USD 6 billion approximately as of December 31, 2003. Grants totalling around $184 million were made in 2003, and the grant making budget for 2004 is approximately USD 200 million.
