In 1996 the Netherlands Red Cross began working in the Tibet Autonomous Region on disaster relief and preparedness and primary health care in rural needs.

It is now providing funding support for China Red Cross Society branches in Changchun, Shenyang, and Beijing, along with training in programme management skills, resource mobilisation, English language, leadership and dissemination of the Red Cross/Red Crescent principles.

In Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning a community based AIDS prevention programme is presently under way using peer education methods among high-risk groups and providing care and support to PLWHA. Funding from2005-2008 for this project has been provided by the Dutch government.

The Netherlands Red Cross will extend its HIV/Aids programme to Jiangsu, Hebei, Beijing and Shanghai in 2006, with funding and support provided by AkzoNobel (through Corporate Social Responsibility funds). The main target groups are students and migrant laborers.

In Liaoning a water and sanitation project was started in 2004 with support from ING Netherlands and Asia Pacific and with technical support from The Netherlands Red Cross.
