This is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that all citizens know their basic legal rights, have equal access to competent counsel and obtain a fair trial. Based in the United States and Switzerland, it is supported by lawyers, law professors and business leaders interested in legal reform and legal aid issues. It collaborates with the governments of China, Vietnam and Cambodia specifically to promote effective criminal justice in those countries.
In China, IBJ works in partnership with the Ministry of Justice’s National Legal Aid programme to publicise citizens’ rights and provide practical training and support to defence lawyers. One output of this collaboration has been a series of ‘Rights of the Accused’ posters and brochures, published in Mandarin, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uighur and English, as part of a nationwide rights awareness campaign. Under the auspices of National Legal Aid of China, IBJ also conducts national training programmes for defence lawyers, and has developed a ‘Legal Aid Defender Resource Manual’ – the first of its kind – and a reference website (www.chinalegalaidprogram.org).
In addition, in Anhui Province, IBJ has established a provincial resource centre for defence lawyers, to support the work of legal aid centres throughout the province. This is a pilot project, which is intended to be replicated in many other provinces.
International Bridges to Justice is funded by donations from private individuals and grants from private foundations.
